Dog Bark

A space to talk about our dogs, just because.

The good, the not so good, the floofy and the absolutely unbelievable antics!

About BarkHop Studio's Dog Bark column

Why Dog Bark?

When Maizy had her first seizure, my world tilted. One moment, she was my happy, playful, slightly crazy girl. The next, I was helplessly watching something I couldn’t control. The vet called it idiopathic epilepsy, which is just a fancy way of saying, “We don’t know why.” Since then, we’ve been navigating medications, late-night worries, and the gut-wrenching decisions that come with wanting to do the very best for her.

Through it all, one thing has been clear—Maizy’s story isn’t just hers. It’s mine, too. It’s ours. Because when you love a dog, their journey becomes yours.

Our journey is why I created Dog Bark.

Inspired by the old-fashioned advice columns—think Dear Abby, but with more fur and fewer life lessons—but instead of being a space for advice, it’s a place for stories. The kind of stories that get lost in social media feeds and countless social media groups but deserve to be seen, shared, and remembered.

🐾 The stories that make us laugh—because let’s be real, some dogs are comedians at heart and some are just so grumpy, all we can do is laugh.
🐾 The stories that make us tear up—because loving a dog so deeply also means one day having to say goodbye.
🐾 The stories that remind us we’re not alone in this crazy, wonderful, heart-expanding thing called dog parenting.

Whether your pup is here by your side or forever in your heart, I invite you to share their story. Because every dog has one. And every story matters.

So, what's your dog's story?

Well, what are you waiting for? Let's Bark about them!

Moof

Moof was one of the SPCA’s longest residents when I first got him. At first, I thought I was just taking some random shelter dog out for the day, but that one day turned into Moof becoming my absolute best friend. On September 24th, 2024 I had signed up for a shelter skip day because I was going through a really hard time, and I knew that spending a day with a dog would help me feel better. Originally, I was supposed to take out a different puppy, but they ended up being sick. So instead, I was matched with Moof. I took him to get a pup cup and grabbed some coffee, then walked him around my school campus for the day. After running around for a while, I brought him back to my dorm to relax and watch some TV together. But eventually, it was time to bring him back to the shelter. When I dropped him off, the staff thanked me and took him from me before I could say goodbye. It didn’t sit right with me, so I went back to his kennel to properly say goodbye. As soon as he saw me, he got so, so excited. I gave him a few pats on the head and told him goodbye, but when I started walking away, he began crying—loudly. Throughout the entire day we had spent together, he hadn’t cried once, but now, he was desperately trying to get out of the kennel to come back to me. At that moment, I knew I couldn’t leave him there. I wasn’t going to let him stay in that shelter any longer. The next day, I went back and took him for another shelter skip day, but this time, he stayed the night in my dorm so I could see how he’d do living on campus with me. He was absolutely perfect. That next morning, I made up my mind—I was going to give him a forever home. And I did. Since then, I’ve taken him all across the Northeast. We travel everywhere together. I made him a support animal and started getting him trained as a psychiatric service dog for my disability. I even created an Instagram account to track his journey around the world with me. Moof helped me through one of the hardest times in my life, so I thought it was only right to return the favor and give him the best life possible.

Kaiya ~ Forever in her family's hearts 🌈

Kaiya came to our family as a puppy back in 2015. She is a beautiful blend of boxer and pit bull with an electrifying sassy girl attitude. She immediately bonded with my son, Nicholas; always ensuring her protective instincts and immense love over him. One year, we had a backyard birthday party for Nicholas, and we had set up a slip n’ slide for the kids. Kaiya would entertain the kids the entire time and participate in the slip n’ slide activity by getting in line, waiting her turn, running down the slide to splash in the pool of water at the end, then get up and go back in line once more. Nicholas and his friends were ecstatic! Kaiya has always been deeply affectionate. She loves cuddles, kisses, and placing her head on your lap. Recently, Kaiya has been diagnosed with cancer in her pancreas. There was a moment where we thought we had lost our special girl, but she’s a fighter. Her strength to keep going hasn’t wavered, and we were able to finally bring her home. For now, at least, we are lucky enough to be able to spend more time with her and enjoy her sassy, spunky, and spicy personality.

Lizzie

When I adopted Lizzie in 2020, I had no idea what I was doing! Despite growing up with dogs, Lizzie was my first pet just for me - and turned out to be more than a handful. With dog reactivity and a high prey drive reported from the rescue, living in Center City, Philadelphia, proved an interesting way for Liz and I to bond. Working with numerous behavioral vets and trainers, Lizzie started a journey gaining confidence in a new environment, just like I was, fresh out of college. Over the past 5 years I've had my Lizzie, she has been my constant in absolutely everything. She has been with me through 4 jobs, 3 apartments, 2 major relationships, and every emotion in between. Every middle-of-the-night bathroom run, bank statement, and dog hair on everything I own is well worth the love of Liz. My sassy pittie will be forever woven into the fabric of my life, and I'm so grateful to be able to celebrate and spoil her to my heart's content!

Dog Bark is a place to...
